The history of franchises dates back to the 1850's when Isaac Singer wanted to increase the distribution of his sewing machines not only in his local area but also globally. Although his efforts proved futile he had unknowingly created the first franchise model and it was quickly copied by others. The most obvious example of successful area franchises are those of Coca-Cola, and Western Union and the railroad companies. However the setting up of smaller franchises in a single area did not enter a "golden age" until the advent of fast food establishments in 1933 such as A&W Root Beer. The idea was to let independent operators use the same name, food, supplies, logo and even building design in exchange for a fee, and it was a total success. To date locating a franchisor and setting up franchises in your area has proved a surefire way to turn a profit for all parties involved.
