Choosing a Franchise
Choosing the perfect franchise yourself requires a great deal of though as there are many different aspects to consider.
Your Skills & Interests
This is the most important aspect when matching any kind of business with a person. By identifying your key skills you can discover the industry or role that is best suited to you. A reason for many people to break away from the standard 9-5 job is to do something that they enjoy, and by choosing a franchise in an industry that requires your skills and interests you will be working in an environment that you enjoy. A franchise is a commitment for several years, so it is best to choose a field that has long term appeal.
The most important requirement for any franchise is that you must be willing to work hard and put 100% into the running of your franchise as with any business. Success is never easy in any industry and by putting everything into the setting up and running of your franchise you will be giving it your best start. Good business sense is a requirement for running a franchise, and skills in this area will be invaluable to you and the business. Great organisation is also essential, as is time keeping and planning.
It is also important to note what kind of hours and times that you wish to work. Many areas, including Retail Franchises and Food Franchises require long and irregular hours, and if this would cause problems it is best not to chose these types of franchises. There are more flexible franchises that allow for working from home and with flexible hours in other franchises such as Childrens Franchises, Education & Training Franchises and franchises in Health & Beauty. These can often be fitted into a family life and can provide great opportunities.
Opportunity in the Market
It is best to choose a franchise in a market that isn't already saturated in your area with many other competitors. If there are competitors you need to see what advantage your franchise would have over them, such as price, better service or superior quality. It is also best to choose a franchise in a growing market so that your business can grow in turn. Knowing your local market is essential, and if there area has a need for the services that you can offer then there is great potential in the area for your franchise to succeed.
Costs
Finance plays a big part in choosing a franchise for yourself, as all of them require a level of financial commitment. Most franchises require an initial franchise fee that gives the franchisor the rights to operate under a trademark and brand, and then pay continuing royalty fees that pay towards continual development of the brand, the services and products that they provide. The royalty fee is also often used for ongoing training of the franchisee and their staff. There may be other fees associated with a franchise, such as advertising along with the requirement to purchase specialised equipment and all of your supplies from the franchisor. Before selecting a franchise it is best to have all of the possible information, including every detail about fees, and finances associated with running a franchise. This include ongoing costs, projected sales, costs and profits and can be quite accurate due to the experience of the franchisor with previous franchises.
The Franchisor
It is important to do your research on the franchisor themselves. Look into their profit margins and success to date. It would also be helpful to take to other franchisees and find out if the projections presented by the franchisor are accurate. The level of support offered by a franchisor is an important consideration; if you require lots of support to help get your franchise up and running it is essential that you choose a franchise that will offer this type of help and advice, as all franchises provide different types of support to their franchisees. Asking existing franchisees about the help that they received is also an excellent way of checking on the level of support provided.
